Leave it to Facebook to bring the forefront of American culture a great atrocity and then to provide a venue for American complacently to disregard it.
Before the holiday I was scrolling through my FB newsfeed and came across this video. It set my righteous indignation into a frenzy.
Why? Just why?
Instead of being outraged at the fact public schools are teaching stupid things to kids across America, I became more concerned as to why is this happening in the first place.
The question is not why are public schools doing such a horrible job of teaching math, or anything else for that matter. The question is, why are parent’s subjecting their children to this torture?
If you’ve spent any amount of time following the atrocity that is public education, you already have some idea of just how it’s failing children, but if you are a parent and aware of the sharp turn education has taken over the cliff in teaching math like this, and other ridiculousness, then it’s no longer the fault of the public education system that they are failing your children. It’s your fault.
Yes, you read that right. The only reason public schools have veered so off the track of teaching reading, writing and arithmetic is because you, as a parent, have allowed it.
The truth is that parents today have choices in how their children are educated. Public school is not the only option. You can take your children out of public schools and send them to private schools or homeschool them. Both are better options, but if you choose not to take advantage of those alternatives, you can become engaged in the public education system and make the changes there that are required to save your children from the atrocities being taught there.
So as you watch the above video maybe it’s time to have a come-to-Jesus-moment and again ask yourself just who it is that is responsible for your kids being tortured, not to mentioned ill served, by such heinous so-called education?
Yeah, maybe the tenor of this video was to illustrate in a light hearted way just how ridiculous Common Core math is. But it’s real, and your kids are suffering because of it.
