Shaping a culture is all about the narrative. Whoever has control of the narrative, who ever is better at crafting the messaging has the most influence over the culture. For decades we, as conservatives, have fallen considerably short in the area of advancing traditional values over those of political correctness. It has hurt us as a society immeasurably.
I think I did a pretty good job of teaching my my kids my own conservative values. But when they go off to college and are barraged by the widely liberal/progressive/socialist views of academia you just never can be sure how that may influence their life’s perspective and general view of the world. After all, they are the future. And if you are like me, and believe traditional values have, … value, you worry that all the years of care spent teaching them right from wrong might just be programed right out of them in liberal post-secondary education.
My kids are both out of college now. While I am happy to report their values weren’t drastically derailed by their experiences there, if I had known about the positive vernacular/mindset coming out of Wyoming University I just might have packed them up and sent them there.
Much to the deep, vitriolic irritation of the liberal academic collective, a new and very refreshing narrative is coming out of “Equality State’s” University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Here is the award winning student recruitment campaign video the university put out in July of 2018. It’s full of all the ideals on which Americans from previous generations were weaned. They are a far cry from what the American culture is now saturated.
“Restless curiosity; whatever happened to that? When did we stop thinking up new questions, and daring to chase down their answers? Should we blindly follow predetermied paths when they never take us anywhere new? Should we really be on auto-pilot when there is so much to be explored off the beaten trail?
The world needs more wonder, more outside thinkers hungry for a challenge. The world needs more cowboys. …”
Are you screaming “Oh-My-God?” I know this is exactly the value system I had hoped my kids would take to college; that burning desire for knowledge, questioning, thinking outside the box that doesn’t stop at the classroom door is exactly what creates rebels, leaders, entrepreneurs, free thinking individuals who aren’t limited by political correctness, over regulated governments, or twisted narratives of those who just want to knock others down a few pegs because it just makes them feel better.
If that skill set is encompassed in the cowboy allegory, then so be it. I miss John Wayne. The world was a better place when he was in it.
FOX News reported in July, 2018 on the message’s opposition: “Darrell Hutchinson, a cultural specialist, told Reuters that people who do not fit the stereotypical image of a cowboy – ‘a white man with a wide-brimmed hat riding the range on horseback” – are not made to feel welcome.
If you’re not a white person, and especially if you’re an Indian, it would make you feel out of place — it wouldn’t make you feel too good about yourself,’ said Hutchinson, a member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe in Wyoming.”
However, if you bother to watch the video to its end, you’ll see the at U of W’s public relations team did an excellent job of welcoming and promoting diversity by including a wide array of individuals who want to think outside the box and expand their minds at the university.
“Ours are diverse cowboys, who come in every sex, shape, color and creed; from Wyoming, Montana, Delaware and Nigeria; because it’s not what you are that makes you a cowboy or a cowgirl. It’s who you are. …”
Despite the squawking and flaming hair of politically correct opposition, it’s a message that seems to be working for them.
The Casper Star Tribune reported on Wednesday: “Chad Baldwin, who spearheaded the campaign as the school’s head of marketing, said it was ‘gratifying’ to get the recognition. He said the campaign has generated roughly 18,000 recruiting leads, and the video accompanying the launch has nearly half a million views on the university’s platforms.”
Some of us might have still been naive enough to think sending our kids off to college was still a mind expanding experience. Obviously those days are gone, and you know that if you are even only half tuned into current events and news.
The way I see it, this message directly contradicts anything coming out of the left’s play book of do as I say, exactly as I say and don’t question. That’s very dangerous attack on their agenda of advancing political correctness and socialism.
So, if you agree that we need more of this kind of messaging to help reign in the culture of political correctness and the slide into socialism, to re-establish the virtue in critical thinking/questioning/exploration please share this.
Those who control the narrative win the culture war.
And just incase you want more reasons why Wyoming is great, here’s this little gem.
